Film review by Scott Mowry | April 2008

"V for Vendetta" comes from the brilliant minds of the Wachowski brothers, Andy and Larry, the same writer and producer duo responsible for "The Matrix" trilogies of movies.

"The Matrix" series really put the Wachowski brothers on the Hollywood map in a spectacular fashion, and movie fans were anxious to see what they come up with next.

The success of the "Matrix" moviess allowed them to venture into a somewhat of a cult film territory, mixed with a dash of controversial political satire to boot, in orde to produce "V For Vendetta."

In these days of political correctness, that combination is bound to get you some attention now won't it?

"V for Vendetta" is based on a comic series of the same name, conceived and penned by Alan Moore. As in the comic, the film is set in the future in the year 2038 in London, England where a dictatorial and imperial government has taken away all civil liberties and rules with an iron fist built on lies, deceit, terror and threats of perpetual war.

Hmmm...that kind of sounds familiar, now doesn't it?

Some others have certainly thought so too. Many have cited the film as a ringing indictment of the Bush administration by the Wachowski brothers and the Hollywood community. Although, that is hard to say, given that many other films seemed to have come out in support of Bush's policies.

The mythic hero of the film, who remains masked throughout, is played by Hugo Weaving. Not that you would know he is, since we never actually get to see his shiny face at any point throughout the film.

His motto is: "Remember, remember, the 5th of November" which is marked in England as "Guy Fawkes Day." Guy Fawkes was vehemently opposed to King James I rule in 1605 and was part of the so-called "Gun Powder Plot" that was concocted to blow up the English Parliament building while the King and his family where visiting.
