Vangelis Discography (1970-2007)

by Scott Mowry

Vangeils.

Just one name to represent one man with a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional and expansive music career that is quite impressive to behold, to say the least.

For nearly 40 years, Vangelis has been releasing beautiful and groundbreaking music that spans a broad spectrum of genres and musical styles.

He has spanned the musical spectrum so broadly that he is somewhat difficult to categorize, although he has now settled comfortably into the New Age genre when he is not composing film soundtracks or Olympic themes, as he did for the 2000 Sydney games.

He has also been labeled electronic, synthesizer music, progressive rock, symphonic rock, space music and even classical. Vangelis music is rich, sumptuous and ornate.

Born as Evanghelos Odyssey Papathanassiou, in Volos, Greece, in 1943, he became just Vangelis when his music career began in earnest in the 1960's.

Perhaps he is best know for his film soundtracks such as "Blade Runner" "Alexander" and, most particularly, "Chariots of Fire," which garnered Vangelis an Academy Award in 1981.
